Abstract

The accelerating convergence of energy systems, artificial intelligence, and complex adaptive infrastructures is transforming the nature of scientific inquiry and engineering practice. Traditional disciplinary boundaries, while remaining essential, are increasingly insufficient for addressing problems characterized by high uncertainty, interconnectedness, and rapid technological change. This editorial introduces the mission of EX-JICS and argues that the future development of engineering, sustainability, and intelligent technologies requires an interdisciplinary approach centered on reliable decision-making. The journal is established as a platform for integrating knowledge across energy science, artificial intelligence, systems engineering, and complexity research while maintaining rigorous scientific standards and openness to diverse methodological perspectives.

1. A New Scientific Landscape

Scientific disciplines have traditionally evolved through specialization. This process has produced extraordinary advances in physics, engineering, economics, computer science, and many other fields. Yet many of the defining challenges of the twenty-first century no longer belong to a single discipline.

Modern energy infrastructure depends on artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence operates within complex technical and social systems. Sustainable development requires the integration of engineering, economics, environmental science, public policy, and human behavior. For this reason, EX-JICS views artificial intelligence not as an isolated discipline but as one component of a broader scientific ecosystem that includes energy systems, decision sciences, systems engineering, and complexity research.

The journal adopts Decision Intelligence as an integrative perspective for studying how humans, computational systems, engineering infrastructures, and organizational processes contribute to reliable decisions.

Rather than defining Decision Intelligence as a separate scientific discipline, EX-JICS regards it as a multidisciplinary research domain that draws upon artificial intelligence, operations research, systems engineering, cognitive science, economics, risk analysis, and complexity science.

5. Why EX-JICS
